The New Madrid Seismic Zone, or NMSZ for short, has a violent history that experts say will repeat itself, although no one is sure when it’ll happen. However, the activity in eastern Tennessee appears independent of the more frequent activity impacting the western portion of the state, which is near the New Madrid Seismic Zone. Today’s earthquake was slightly weaker than yesterday’s. In the last 30 days, twelve earthquakes have struck nearby in eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina yesterday’s was the second strongest of that set, with the strongest being a magnitude 3.2 event that struck near West Canton, North Carolina on June 4. Only a handful of people used the “Did you feel it?” reporting tool on the USGS website to report shaking from these quakes. There have been no reported injuries or damage from either earthquake. The map illustrates such hazards and is based on the most recent USGS models for the conterminous U.S. Earthquake hazard map showing peak ground accelerations having a 2 percent probability of being exceeded in 50 years, for a firm rock site. Earthquake hazards are possible in broad areas of the United States. While yesterday’s earthquake struck between Knoxville and Morristown, today’s hit between Mascot and Rutledge. ![]() The relatively weak 2.5 earthquake struck at a depth of 7.4 km this is in contrast to yesterday’s earthquake that had a magnitude of 2.6 and a depth of 15.6 km. ![]() According to USGS, today’s earthquake struck almost 24 hours after yesterday’s 10:26 am earthquake at 10:27 am today.
